Las Meninas, by the 17th-century artist Velazquez, which depicts the family of King Philip I of Spain, is one of the great masterpieces of European painting; the vast, ambitious canvas has inspired artists from Goya to Picasso.

This fascinating film traces Velazquez’s entire career, from his early training in Seville, to his appointment as the king’s court painter in Madrid, which he remained until his death in 1660.
