This book is a tribute to Ainslie’s life and legacy – his vibrant painting practice, radical teaching philosophy, and deep commitment to community. Through a composite of voices, memories and archival material, it offers a multifacted portrait of an artist whi believed that freedom in art could help shape freedom in society.
The publication includes articles written by the three young writers, Siya Masuku, Lukho Witbooi and Nolan Stevens, alongside texts by Sassen and Jamal, spanning the history of the Bag Factory Artists’ Studios to the contemporary themes emerging out of interviewed artists’ work. Stevens gives an overview of the institution through comparing the work of younger and older artists working in the studios. Masuku looks at the work of female artists in the space, past and present, and Witbooi does an in-depth analysis of Onyis Martins work, which evokes themes of memory and loss.
David Koloane was born in 1938 in Alexandra Township, Johannesburg. He studied art at the Bill Ainslie Studios in Johannesburg and later completed a Diploma in Museum Studies at the University of London. Koloane established a reputation, both locally and internationally, as a pioneer black artist in apartheid South Africa and was the founding member of institutions promoting and supporting black talent in South Africa from the mid-1970s.
