R450Banksy is the world’s most famous living artist, yet no one knows who he is. For more than twenty years, his wryly political and darkly humorous spray paintings have appeared mysteriously on urban walls around the globe, generating headlines and controversy. Art critics disdain him, but the public (and the art market) love him. With this generously illustrated book, artist and critic Carol Diehl is the first author to probe the depths of the Banksy mystery. Through her exploration of his paintings, installations, writings, and Academy Award-nominated film, Exit through the Gift Shop, Diehl proves unequivocally that there’s more to Banksy than the painting on the wall.

R550It is 2022, just over a century since the founding of arguably the world’s most widely celebrated art and design school. In 2019, on the occasion of the Bauhaus’ centenary, the world’s media focused on the various ‘legacies’ of this school. Such retrospective appraisals of Bauhaus moment(s), movement(s) and model(s) demonstrate that the school has certainly not gone missing. Using the notion of verfehlen/missing as a point of departure, these time-travelling and varied contributions from the Global South posit different ways in which the word missing may be applied to the Bauhaus: Contributors from arts, architecture and design backgrounds raise and critique a range of problematic aspects attached to a nostalgic position of longing for the Bauhaus and reveal numerous instances of how the school’s mythologised model, freighted with Western confidence and hardheadedness, often simply misses, and continues to miss the point.

Felt is the oldest fabric known to mankind; its earliest examples date back to 6,500 B.C. In recent years, the fabric has found contemporary applications in an extraordinary range of fields, including product design, fashion, architecture and home furnishings. Felt’s first revival in modern times occurred as a part of the fiber-arts movement of the 1970s; the 1990s saw a surge of innovations in its production, triggering the current resurgence of interest in the fabric. A combination of scholarly research into its history, the exploration of its technical applications and sustainability issues have inspired many leading artists and designers to work with felt. Fashioning Felt examines this recent explosion of interest. Published in conjunction with a major exhibition at the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, it presents handmade and commercially produced designs for felt, and explores through essays and full-color illustrations the material’s rich history.
