Over the past 50 years, drawing has been elevated from a supporting role to a primary medium, ranking alongside painting as a central art form. Since the publication of Vitamin D (2005) and D2 (2013), contemporary artists have continued to explore drawing’s possibilities – from intimate to large-scale works, in a diversity of mark-making processes and materials. Vitamin D3 showcases more than 100 such artists, nominated by more than 70 international art experts.
Cuban-born Abelardo Morell (b.1948) began photographing his domestic environment after the birth of his son in 1986. Considering the world from a child’s point of view, he photographed household objects from surprising perspectives to produce unfamiliar and disconcerting results that challenge the viewer’s perception of reality.
Its pages include unpublished behind-the-scenes material, together with ephemera from the photographers’ archives about the making of their books.
“Boarding House” shows an imaginary space of transient residence, of coming and goings, of people without homes, sheltering in an abode that they are using for their immediate survival. The structure is basic and fundamental and it is furnished with objects that are necessarily for an elementary existence. Remnants function here as physical symbols of events that have occurred in this space; broken pieces of a functional reality exist as the leftovers of scenarios that were played out here.
