“Serenity and surrender are not the ultimate goals of spirituality. If anyone told you that the spiritual life was a ‘higher plane’, a ‘zone of tranquillity’, to be reached by surrendering your will to the divine and merging with the cosmos – don’t believe them! There is no escaping the daily experience that we live our lives in tension, ‘strung-out.’ But if our seeming earth-bound souls are anchored in a heavenly reality, it is a tension that creates beautiful music, music that comforts the weary hearts of other travellers.
