Terry Frost, one of the most important painters working in Britain in the 1950s, is now a senior artist renowned for the exuberance and joy of his paintings. This book seeks to communicate the color and verve of his work while examining the rigor that is often obscured by those qualities. Frost’s output from 1945 to today is assessed in terms of the cultural climate within which it was made. In Britain, the Mediterranean, and the U.S., Frost created paintings that were avowedly abstract but determined by external sources, notably landscapes, the erotic nude, and, most especially, moments of inspiration.
