The aim is to develop skills needed in the classroom, such as fine and cross motor skills, concentration, visual perception, concept formation (learned in creative activities in small groups) and to give the kids an opportunity to develop their social skills.
The publication is authored by occupational therapist Regina Broenner, who is additionally the Stanford Creative Works Project Coordinator.
Stanford Creative Works was created in 2012 to service the under-resourced community of Stanford (Western Cape), providing purposeful, positive and engaging activities for children to counteract negative influences, such as drug-taking in young children and early school drop-outs. Workshops were started in the community, inviting children to engage in creative activities, craft projects and outings.
Stanford Creative Works is a David Krut Projects supported initiative and aims to promote a nurturing, safe and stimulating environment for children and young adults to explore their creative potential and strengthen skills through age-appropriate early stimulation. Movement games, art making, play activities and storytelling are used as tools to engage educational themes that are valid and developmentally appropriate in the child’s life.
This program strives to offer a platform for children to express themselves with freedom and practice life skills in a safe environment, and is motivated by the belief that access to quality education and stimulation for all people is fundamental for the growth of healthy, wholesome and aware individuals and communities.
