Launch of Michele Betty’s poetry anthology Metaphysical Balm

David Krut Projects Cape Town

With Michèle Betty and Joan Hambidge

Wednesday the 23rd March at 18:00

David Krut Projects Cape Town (DKCT) had the pleasure of launching Michèle Betty’s new poetry anthology entitled, Metaphysical Balm. Betty completed her MA in Creative Writing at the University of Cape Town (UCT) under the mentorship of Joan Hambidge and Metaphysical Balm was completed in partial fulfillment of the MA requirements. Joan Hambidge is a professor in Creative Writing at UCT, and an award-winning poet, novelist, critic and author of several poetry collections, novels, and academic texts.

At the event, Betty was in conversation with Hambidge, about the running themes and philosophies within Metaphysical Balm and of poets, such as T.S Eliot, who inspired her anthology. Betty spoke of poetry as a means of healing and consolation rather than a solution.

Metaphysical Balm was published by Dryad Press (Pty) Ltd- a bespoke poetry publishing house founded by Hambidge and Betty, dedicated to the promotion and publishing of poetry in South Africa. It is through collaborating with publications such as this one that David Krut Bookstore aims to bring an awareness in and appreciation of South African poetry.
