Description
This educational supplement is published together with the TAXI Art Book on Steven Cohen. Steven Cohen is a pioneering artist best known for his performances and public interventions. He challenges the boundaries of traditional media and modes of expression and provocatively confronts issues of identity. Cohen’s art can be studied as part of the Grade 12 syllabus in the module of contemporary South African art and in other more general contexts, like debates around the freedom of artistic creativity.
This supplement explores themes in Cohen’s work such as his use of silk-screened furniture to express ideas about South African Society and the use of his body to create living art performances that challenge attitudes to that which are historically marginalised and censored. Projects include performance, art making, writing, comprehension and debate.
