Description
Zapiro needs no introduction. His eighteenth annual speaks for itself. No year would be complete without Zapiro’s annual collection of cartoons, and in this latest book of sharp-witted and well-timed cartoons, Zapiro once again proves himself a satirical genius, ensuring that no event passes by without comment or a laugh.
Born in Cape Town, Zapiro – aka Jonathan Shapiro – studied architecture at UCT before moving to the art campus, Michaelis. Following his two-year conscription in the army, he applied for and was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study cartooning at the School of Visual Arts in New York for two years.
The name Zapiro was derived from the nickname of a fellow pupil at Rondebosch Boys High School, Martin Zapiro, whose friends called him Zap. After Martin’s death, Zapiro adopted the name.
