Kelvin Sithole has been part of the David Krut Bookstore team for over a year, here is his selection of seven titles from the Photography shelves that you need in your book collection!

Colour in Photography!

Colour holds power, as a source of information which can impact our emotions and behaviors.

With this title, Thames & Hudson presents photographs from practically all the great names and artists who use the medium, by grouping them together through six basic colours – red, blue, green, yellow, white and black; thereby triggering a stream of enjoyable and stimulating experiences.

Reinvention of the “Nude” wheel.

This publication is a monograph about a Czech photographer who lived from 1883 till 1961 – Frantisek Drtikol. The Photographer reinvented the genre of nude photography in the early 20th century.

…he later gave up photography to concentrate on painting.

If you don’t know where you come from, you don’t know where you’re going.”

Maya Angelou

Photographer Per Englund presented a raw yet heartfelt take of South African townships in the early 2000s. In The Beautiful Struggle, the reader will meet youth’s talking about their lives and dreams…I wonder where they are today.

Like a luscious green plant growing in between pavement cracks, this publication presents the authenticity and flavor that can only be birthed through the harsh struggle of the township life.

Someone say “Contemporary Sculpture!

Through the collaboration between Serpentine Gallery and The Royal Parks, Anish Kapoor’s major stainless steel sculptures were showcased as the first contemporary sculpture exhibition sited in Kensington Gardens for over 25 years. This publication documents the project through photographs and text that contextualizes the concept.

Drawing parallels between two 19th Century inventions – Photography and the Automobile

Written by Marta Weiss, Senior Curator of Photographs at the V&A Museum in London, and published to coincide with the opening of the exhibition ‘Cars: Accelerating the Modern World’, Autofocus presents over 100 photographs, supported by commentaries that span from the early years of the automobile to the present day.

Japan: A Self-Portrait: Photographs 1945 – 1964

Documentary photographs presented like this bypass censorship and present a true reflection of the reality we are creating.

Human resilience, the Japanese version.

In this Flammarion publication – An independent photography critic & photographic historian, the head curator of photography at the National Museum of Art in Paris, and Professor Emeritus at Hitotsubashi University in Japan collaborated to present 150 photographs accompanied by essays.

The title details events from the 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Robin Rhode – Who Saw Who

A South African artist, pro-skateboarder and a highlight at basketball slamdunk competitions. Robin Rhode is about as cool as it gets.

Rhode uses a playful persona to hint at issues such as urban poverty, violence and personal freedom in the shadow of imperialism. He sees beyond the typical boundaries of drawing and creates interactive performances, which are recorded by photography and film.

He reminds me of a time when life was simpler, and all I had to do was use the chalk-like stone to draw hopscotch on the street.
