Description

Cooked in South Africa is an initiative of Wish Upon a Star, a non-profit fund-raising charity, and all proceeds from the sales of this book will be donated to children living with disability.

Stories of South Africa’s rich, multicultural nation through food with Gary Cotterell, who for Cooked in South Africa, asked 47 Foodies around South Africa “What are your earliest memories of food?”
From Chefs at more formal establishments to food truckers, market makers and artisan bakers, the wonderful characters in this book have documented their colourful journeys and recipes, which reflect the rich diversity and multi-cultural food scene of South Africa through food.

Gary Cotterell is a well-travelled writer, editor and creative director in lifestyle media. He launched Business Day’s award-winning luxury lifestyle magazine in 2004 and writes a weekly column on watches for the publication. He was editor-at-large for Elle Decoration for nine years and is the contributing lifestyle editor for Stuff magazine. Combining his appreciation of life’s little luxuries and his love of food, ‘Cooked in South Africa’ highlights the importance of food in our lives, while capturing the early memories and colourful journeys of foodies in South Africa.

This fine book has a charity angle too Wish upon a Star. Jo-An Epstein is a
neurodevelopment (mostly disabled children from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds) at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg. Due to the lack of care facilities in and around JHB she partnered with long-time friend Karen Liebmann, whose background is in fashion design, to raise funds to create and improve classrooms. In 2013, they established a non-profit fund-raising charity WISH UPON A STAR (WUAS). Their first project, a range of star-themed jewellery, netted a substantial amount in the first round of fund-raising. All profits were donated to the Childhood Disability Centre in Johannesburg.
